The Northern California Band Association has long been committed to musical excellence, educational integrity, and the growth of student musicians across our region. As we continue to evolve, it is essential that our organization also prioritize meaningful representation in both our judging panels and our honor group repertoire. Representation matters because it shapes perspective. When adjudication panels reflect the diversity of the students and communities we serve—across race, gender, sexual orientation, cultural background, geography, and professional experience—we strengthen the credibility and fairness of our evaluations. Diverse panels bring broader musical lenses, reduce unconscious bias, and model inclusivity for students who are looking to see themselves reflected in positions of leadership and authority within the music education community.

Similarly, the repertoire selected for honor groups communicates our values. Programming music by composers from varied cultural, racial, and gender backgrounds not only broadens students’ musical understanding but also affirms that the canon of wind band literature is expansive and evolving. Including diverse composers and musical traditions alongside established masterworks enriches the educational experience, fosters cultural literacy, and ensures that our honor ensembles represent the full spectrum of artistic voices contributing to the band world.

By intentionally cultivating diverse adjudication panels and thoughtfully curating inclusive repertoire, the Northern California Band Association can continue to lead with both musical distinction and social responsibility.
